And they're off!

This just in:

"Both ceremonies will be presented by Sue Barker and Huw Edwards. Huw is joined in the commentary box by Hazel Irvine and Carrie Gracie.

Gabby Logan fronts the BBC's evening highlights programme Games Today, while Hazel Irvine and Adrian Chiles present Olympic Breakfast at 6am.

Other presenters include: Clare Balding, Jake Humphrey, John Inverdale and Rishi Persad.

A team of world-class presenters, commentators and analysts will provide intelligent, informative and exclusive insight on all the action in China.

The BBC Television team comprises some well-loved and respected faces, as well as a few new ones.

Michael Johnson, Colin Jackson, Jonathan Edwards and Steve Cram will guide viewers through the track and field events, with Brendan Foster, Paul Dickenson and Stuart Storey; Sharron Davies, Adrian Moorhouse and Andy Jameson will be poolside; Garry Herbert, Daniel Topolski and John Inverdale will be joined at the water's edge by Olympic rowing legend Sir Steve Redgrave; Hugh Porter, Chris Boardman, Gary Sutton and Jill Douglas will be following Team GB at the Velodrome; and Richie Woodhall and Jim Neilly will be ringside.

The BBC Television team of roving reporters – Sir Matt Pinsent, Phil Jones, Garry Richardson and Jill Douglas – will prove indispensable as they get under the skin of the man or woman of the moment."

Well, pretty much as expected I suppose. We still have to look at the shrivelled prune that is Barker. DHR remembers seeing her in the media area of the old stadium waiting for Poola to turn up, wearing a fetching white trouser suit number. She looked taller than she does on telly. But Rishi Persad? WhoHe? Why not me?

I fully expect to have many sleepless nights, one ear plugged into the radio, dozing fitfully while dreaming of Gold - can't wait!

Back to the Opening Ceremony - the athletes coming in is one of my favourite bits, laughing at some of the ridiculous uniforms, hearing Bazza's stats, wiping away the dust when plucky Iraq's team of wrestlers come in...

Earlier today

Have we had the first shock of the games - Canada beating Argentina 2-1 in the Womens Footie? Brazil & Germany, last year's world cup finalists, battled out a 0-0 draw. That is to say, a bigger shock than seeing Rebecca Romero and Phillips Idowu in the buff...

Mark Foster announced as GB flag bearer - a great choice, I think. Great competitor over the years, this must be his last one as he's 38! 47 international medals, though none of them Olympic. Though apparently, and outrageously, the whole team will not be at the opening ceremony - hanging around the Casinos of Macau in their holding camp waiting for their events. THIS IS WRONG! The Olympics are the pinnacle of a sportsperson's career, they should be at the opening ceremony, experiencing the dusty conditions. I know a few people who'd be more than happy to step in - maybe we could wear masks, or carry effigies of the person we are representing in the parade. What do you think? Bagsy Victoria Pendleton.

In other news, how I chuckled as Glasgow 'please let us play in the premiership mister' Rangers were knocked out of Europe last night by plucky Kaunas of Lithuania!

I agree with Foster as our flag bearer. Though usually I'm not that fussed with the opening ceremony; it's all become a bit overblown. Surely a drinks reception with a representative from each country, with a short welcoming toast over a schooner of sherry, would suffice. Though I am intrigued to see how they're going to 'firework' the Olympic rings into the sky. Let's just get on with the sport.

More important matters: what will the BBC be throwing up in terms of presenting team, specifically the studio anchors? Cycling, swimming, gymnastics I'd say are in safe hands.

Who Jake Humphrey?
