Unbelievable stuff! 19 year old Rebecca Adlington first female to win a gold in the pool since Anita Lonsborough in 1960! Sharon Davies in tears in the mix zone, dust in the bedroom where I happened to wake up to hear the last 200m - she came out of nowhere, the American Katie Hoff (do hassle the hoff - sorry, it is 4.30am) was cruising it. 7/100s of a second - thrashed her! Jo Jackson got the Bronze as well - marvellous stuff. Not even her best event either! COME ON! Back to bed for me now. But before I go, Phelps somehow still on target for his 8 golds - they squeezed out the French in the last 25m to pip them, smash the world record, and keep Phelpsy in the hunt...

An explanation for the tears comes from another of our resident experts: "Davis was probably a bit choked because she should have won gold instead of silver in Moscow in 80. the east german that beat her has since admitted that she was on drugs for the race. Must bring it all back for shazza…poor luv."
Oh yeah, and Moaning McMurray crashed out in the first round against a plucky lad from Chinese Taipei. While I don't necessarily hold with the view that he couldn't be bothered (he did go a long way for this, after all, which wasn't compulsory), it was a particularly lame performance, even by the laughably erratic World Number 6 - he was number 2 today, that's for sure...
